The Main Street Theater property was purchased by Fitchburg State University in 2016. The site is comprised of a 30,000 SF lot with a 51,000 SF four-story building. The theater building was constructed in 1927, and has sat abandoned for the past 30 years, during which time it has suffered significant deterioration. Through the University’s planned renovation, the building interior and exterior will be fully updated and reimagined, allowing it to house a performing arts center for use by the University and the community, shared workspace for Fitchburg State’s game design program (completed in 2018 and not in contract), and storefront retail space. In addition, Fitchburg State University anticipates planning improvements in the abutting parking lot to support the renovations.
